To accompany your username and password, two-factor authentication on your Google Account requires a special code, which it will send to you either by text message or by a mobile application. Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird or Evolution are programs known as desktop email clients. They cannot therefore send a response to two factors. An application specific password which is a special password linked to your account used for a specific program, service or situation is one solution to this problem.

Create a password specific to a Gmail application

These steps allow you to generate a new specific password for an email program, utility or add-on to access your Gmail account via IMAP or POP with two-step authentication applied:

 Click on your name or on the photo in the upper right corner of your Gmail inbox;

 Press the Google Account button in the sheet that appeared;

 Click on the Security button in the left sidebar;

 Scroll down to the Connection to Google section;

 In the Password and Login Method section, click Application Passwords. Once you are prompted for your Gmail password, enter it over Enter your password, then click Next;

 Make sure Mail or Other (Custom name) is selected in the drop down menu select an application. If you selected Mail, choose a computer or a device in the menu select a device and if you selected Other (Personalized name), type the application or the add-on and, possibly the device (like Mozilla Thunderbird on my laptop) Linux) via YouTube on my Xbox for example;

 Click Generate;

 Find and use the password immediately under Your application password for your device. Type or paste the password into the email program, Gmail add-on, or service immediately. You will no longer see it;

 Click Done.

Managing application-specific passwords

The application-specific password is important because you can revoke and regenerate a service-by-service password without changing the master password for your account. Revoke previously defined passwords without being used to create a new application-specific password for a program or service for the same application. You have the option of generating as many application-specific passwords as you want, but it's best to use an application-specific password only for one service.

You also need to configure two-factor authentication for a wide range of accounts and for your social media accounts other than your Google account.
