Tip for simply knowing how to easily access your chat accounts in one place (Mozilla Thunderbird). Read on.

             Google, IRC, XMPP and Twitter are the means of discussion and conversation. Some people chat only with Google, others chat with IRC, other less important chats are on XMPP, and other conversations are chat on Twitter. Aside from helping you manage your e-mail messages, Mozilla Thunderbird can speak to them all. In a simple, unified chat window, Mozilla Thunderbird consolidates the conversations of all your contacts. Setting up accounts with various protocols, services and servers is relatively simple.

Add and configure chat accounts in Mozilla Thunderbird

These steps allow you to configure a new chat account in Mozilla Thunderbird:

§ Select Tools> Account settings in Windows or macOS or Edit> Account settings in Linux in the menu bar of Mozilla Thunderbird;

§ Click on Account Actions under the list of accounts;

§ Select Add a chat account from the menu that appears to open the Chat network screen;

§ At this stage, choose one of the following options: Twitter, Google Talk, IRC and XMPP and follow the instructions below to choose the option chosen.

How to add a Twitter account

§ Click on Twitter in the discussion network screen, then click on Continue;

§ Enter your Twitter username under Username and click Continue;

§ You can optionally enter an alias for the account in conversations under Alias. The alias is used by you in conversations and only you can see it;

§ If you wish, to follow the keywords and receive a message when one of them is mentioned on Twitter, click to expand Twitter options and enter the keywords you want to follow under Followed keywords. Separate keywords with commas but no spaces;

§ Click on Continue;

§ Check Connect this account now;

§ Click Done;

§ In the Twitter authentication window that appears, make sure that your Twitter username appears above Username or email;

§ Type your Twitter password on password. You can leave Remember me without control; Mozilla Thunderbird will still be able to connect you to Twitter automatically;

§ Click on Authorize the application.

How to Add an IRC Server and an Account

§ Make sure IRC is selected in the Chat Network screen and click Continue;

§ Type your user name on the IRC server under User name. Many IRC servers allow you to create a user name without registering separately;

§ Click on Continue;

§ Type the password for your IRC account under Password. If you don't need a password to connect to the IRC server, or if you want Mozilla Thunderbird to prompt you for it each time you connect to the server, you can leave the Password field blank;

§ Click on Continue again;

§ If desired, enter the name you want to appear in discussions and conversations when you post something on local Alias;

§ If desired, open Open IRC Options to specify a different server port, SSL for an encrypted connection and other parameters;

§ Now click on Done.

§ Click on XMPP in the chat network screen;

§ Enter the name of your XMPP account next to Username;

§ Click on Continue;

§ Type the password for your XMPP account under Password;

§ Click on Continue;

§ If you want a name other than your XMPP username to appear in chat transcripts, type the desired alias under Alias. Only you know this name will see this name;

§ To specify the XMPP server, expand XMPP Options and enter the name of the XMPP server under Server. You can optionally define the server port under Port;

§ Click on Continue again;

§ Click Done;
