When you're nostalgic, you can read your AOL email on the web when you're anywhere and in the AOL desktop app. With the Mozilla Thunderbird application, if you want to read your AOL mail, configure it and you will see all your messages and folders.
Access AOL messaging in Mozilla Thunderbird
Follow these steps if you want to set up an AOL email account in Mozilla Thunderbird:
o Select Tools> Account settings ... (Windows, Mac) or Edit> Account settings (Linux) from the Mozilla Thunderbird menu;
• Press the Alt key if you cannot see the menu.
o Click on Account Actions;
o Select Add an email account ... from the menu that appears;
o Type your name under Your name :;
o Now type your full AOL email address (including "@ aol.com" or this domain your address belongs to) under Email Address:;
o Enter your AOL email password under Password :;
o Click Continue;
o Make sure that IMAP (remote folders) is selected;

  • Select POP3 (keep mail on your computer) to have Mozilla Thunderbird download new messages from AOL without synchronizing folders and actions.
  • Note that with POP3, Mozilla Thunderbird will be configured to delete messages downloaded from AOL after two weeks or after deleting them locally; you can change these options in Server Settings for your account in the next step.

o Click Done;
o Click OK.
Access AOL Mail in Mozilla Thunderbird 2
In Mozilla Thunderbird 2, configuring access to an AOL Mail email account is done by following these steps:
o Select Tools> Account settings ... or Edit> Account settings from the menu;
o Click on Add an account ...;
o Make sure the email account is selected;
o Click Continue;
o Enter your name under Your name :;
o Type your AOL email address under Email address :;
• Be sure to include the "@ aol.com" section after your AOL screen name. If your screen name is "aristote" for example, use "aristote@aol.com".
o Click Continue;
o Make sure IMAP is selected under Select the type of incoming server you are using;
o Type "imap.aol.com" under Incoming server :;
o Click Continue;
o Check that Mozilla Thunderbird has entered your AOL screen name in the Inbound username: and Outbound username: fields;
o Click Continue;
o Give a name to the descriptive account ("Email AOL" or what Mozilla Thunderbird suggests your AOL email address) under Account name :;
o Click Continue;
o Now click on Done;
o Highlight Outgoing Server in the list of accounts;
o Click on Add ... on the right;
o Type "Email AOL" under Description :;
o Enter "smtp.aol.mail" under Server name;
o Type "587" under Port;
o Make sure that Use name and password is checked;
o Enter your AOL screen name under Username :;
o Click OK;
o Now select your AOL account in the list of accounts;
o Under Outgoing server (SMTP) :, choose AOL Email- smtp.aol.com;
o Highlight Copies and Folders under your AIM email account in the server list;
o Make sure that Place a copy: is not checked under When sending messages, automatically :;
o Click OK.
