How to check for new mail in Mozilla Thunderbird - Intertuto

Immediately configure Mozilla Thunderbird to automatically check emails as well as new messages at an interval and IDLE IMAP.

The configuration of Mozilla Thunderbird allows you to check new messages regularly so that your inbox is always (almost) up to date or so that you are notified of incoming messages in time. In an email account in Mozilla Thunderbird or Mozilla, new mail is checked automatically and periodically by following these steps:
o Select Tools / Account settings ... (or Edit / Account settings ...) from the menu.
• You can also click on the hamburger menu in Mozilla Thunderbird and select Preferences / Account Settings ... from the menu that appeared.
• In Netscape or Mozilla, select Edit / Mail & Newsgroups account settings ....
o For each account you wish to include in the automatic mail verification:
• Go to the Server settings subcategory for the desired account.
• Make sure that Check for new messages every minute is selected.
§ To have Mozilla Thunderbird also check for new messages immediately after launching, make sure that the Check for new messages at startup check box is also checked.
§ To have Mozilla Thunderbird receive new messages in the inbox almost immediately after their arrival in your account, make sure that the Allow immediate server notifications when new messages arrive option is also checked; see below for more details.
• Enter your preferred mail check interval.
§ You can set this number to just about anything practical, from one minute interval to 410065408 minutes to check your mail about every 780 years, but not as often.
§ When you have a small interval, for example a minute, it is possible that a mail check is always in progress when a new start is planned; it will not be a problem.
o Click OK.

Checking for new messages at an interval and IDLE IMAP

The email program does not need to check for new messages by sending a command to the server with the IMAP IDLE functionality offered by many IMAP email accounts. When a new email arrives on the account, the server informs the email program instead which could be more efficient and economical or more annoying and distracting depending on the amount of emails received.
Using IMAP IDLE, there is a possibility that Mozilla Thunderbird can ask IMAP servers to notify it of new messages in the inbox folders. If it happens that you no longer want these almost up-to-date updates and Mozilla Thunderbird is still checking for new messages,
• Make sure that the Allow immediate server notifications when new messages arrive option is disabled.
• Checking for new messages every minute is disabled.
