Simple steps that help you customize the sound of your Mac when new messages arrive on Mac OS X and macOS Mail.
When new messages arrive, the Mac OS X Mail application and macOS Mail announce it with a default sound imaginatively called New Messages. You will however find a list of sounds in Preferences, and there you can choose a different sound which will be played each time the new message or new email arrives.
Change the new mail sound in Mac OS X and macOS Mail
The following steps help you define a new email sound in Mac OS X and macOS Mail for customizing your Mac:
Open the Mail application;
In the Mail menu bar, click Mail, then Preferences ...;
Go to the General tab;
Select your favorite sound from the drop-down menu next to the sound of new messages.
N.B: the 14 options include Sosumi, Ping, Submarine, Tink and other favorites from Apple.
Other email preferences
You may need to change the preference while in the email preferences screen.
1. Check new messages
This is set by default to Automatically but using the drop-down menu you can also set the frequency every 5,10,15, 20, 30 minutes or a manual recovery.
2. Unread dock count
Its role is to display the number of unread messages with a red number superimposed on the Mail icon on the Mac dock. Although the default is only for the inbox, this setting can be changed to publish a number for all emails or only for the current date or some more obscure options.
3. The Downloads folder
It allows you to place all the downloaded files in the Downloads folder accessible on the dock. The download location can be changed for anytime anywhere on your Mac.
4. Other options
In them you will find the possibility of automatically adding invitations to the calendar, a parameter facilitating the subsequent sending of your messages in the event that there is unavailability of the outgoing service as well as the option helping in the opening of split mode messages in full screen.
