Secondary email address for password recovery
Follow the instructions below to add a secondary email address to your Gmail account for password recovery:
Go to the connection and security page of your Google account, then click on Connect to Google in the navigation menu;
In the Account Recovery Options area, click the arrow next to Email Recovery. As a precaution, Google will require you to re-authenticate yourself on your account;
Click on the pencil next to the email address area and enter a valid address. This address should not be your Gmail account or any of your account aliases. Click Done after entering your recovery address.
Gmail account security
It is important that the recovery address is safe and accessible to you even if it is a step in the right direction. There, you must target a business address or an address other than Google such as Outlook.com for example. You will not be without recourse if your information is compromised in this case.
Follow best practices like enabling two-factor authentication on your account and choose if you have a choice of two-factor approaches based on a hardware device like a USB security key or an authentication app on your smartphone apart from establishing a recovery password. But you should avoid two-factor solutions based on text messages if you can.
You can configure two-factor security in the same menu in your Google account.
You can protect yourself against account lockouts. This is what you learn from this article. To do this better, you need to add a secondary email address to your Gmail account for password recovery as well as secure your Gmail account.
