There is always a way to create a copy of your Outlook Express address book for backup or migration purposes. However, exporting the Outlook Express Address Book using the method described in this article only works if you do not share Outlook Express contacts with Outlook. So, you can back up a shared address book with other Outlook data. To achieve this, one must:
- Select Tools / Address Book ... from the Outlook Express menu.
- Choose Help / About Address Book from the address book menu.
- Choose the path in the File box (without putting the file name).
v If the complete string under File: is "C: \ Documents and Settings \ username \ Application Data \ Microsoft \ Address Book \ username.wab", for example, highlight "C: \ and Settings \ username \ Application Data \ Microsoft \ Address Book \ ".
v If its "About Address Book" does not display a File dialog box: select Execute ... from the Start menu.
v Click "regedit".
v Press OK.
v Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ ¬Software \ ¬Microsoft \ ¬WAB \ ¬WAB4 \ ¬Wab Filename.
v Highlight the default key path as above:
a. Press Ctrl-C.
b. Click on OK.
c. Choose Execute ... from the Start menu.
d. Press Ctrl-V.
e. Press OK.
f. Click on the address book file - the file name in the File box: above; it usually bears the user name - with the right mouse button.
g. Choose Copy from the context menu. Open the folder where you want to keep the backup copy in Windows Explorer.
h. Select Edit / Paste from the menu.
Recover from the backup copy of the Outlook Express Address Book.
